Syntactic Priming over Clusters of Noun Phrases
نویسنده
چکیده
This thesis introduces the concept of syntactic cross-priming: priming between nonidentical syntactic rules, analogous to lexical association. I also present the hypothesis that cross-priming is related to similarity, to the effect that pairs more similar rules will have higher cross-priming strengths. I introduce a variant of adaptation, crossadaptation as a measure for cross-priming in a corpus of written text, and show that high cross-adaptation correlates with similarity metrics. In addition, I present two attempts at clustering rules into clusters of high similarity and cross-priming.

Syntactic Priming of Noun Phrases in Children: Investigating Susceptibility to Preferred and Dispreferred Structures
The present study investigates syntactic priming with children aged three and four. It examines whether children can be primed to use two alternative complex noun phrases (an adjective+noun structure and a noun+relative clause construction) to describe pictures, how susceptible children are to priming (in comparison to adult subjects) and which of the two alternative phrases is preferred accord...
متن کاملSyntactic priming in comprehension: Parallelism effects with and without coordination
Although previous research has shown a processing facilitation for conjoined phrases that share the same structure, it is currently not clear whether this parallelism advantage is specific to particular syntactic environments such as coordination, or whether it is an example of more general effect in sentence comprehension. Here, we report three eye-tracking experiments that test for parallelis...
متن کاملL2 Learners’ English Prepositional-Phrase Processing with Consideration of L2 Proficiency and Word Familiarity: A mixed-effect Analysis
A considerable number of studies have hitherto examined how native speakers and second language (hereafter L1 and L2, respectively) learners of English process English prepositional phrases. It is usually thought that both L1 and L2 speakers have a preference for verb phrase modification (e.g., The boy broke the old window with a ball of snow.) over noun phrase modification (e.g., The boy broke...

Linguistic data was collected via recording free speech, and interviewing with 30 (15 females, 15 males) illiterate Sistani language consultants of age 40–102 year...
متن کاملUse of Articles in Learning English as a Foreign Language: A Study of Iranian English Undergraduates
The significance of error analysis for the learner, the teacher and the researcher is now widely recognized. Earlier studies of error analysis concentrated on intersystematic comparison of the “native language” and the “target language” and drew the required data largely from intuitions and impressionistic observations. This study was conducted on the basis of the following observations: (1) to...
